Philip Southerland was for many years the overseer of Stagville Plantation. Stagville, now a state-owned Historic Register property, was a 30,000-acre plantation complex begun in the 18th-century and belonging through most of two centuries to the Bennehan-Cameron family. At its antebellum height it was also home to over 900 slaves, whose descendants continued to live and work on the land.
When Philip Southerland retired c1887, his employer sold him five hundred acres at the northernmost edge of Stagville. The Southerland home is still standing and is listed on the Eno River "Little Basin Driving Tour" of Durham and Orange Counties.
