Hardeman Co., TN
History
Hardeman County is in West Tennessee, one of the states three "grand divisions". Formed in 1823 from Hardin County and Indian lands, it was named in honor of Thomas Jones Hardeman, Creek and War of 1812 Soldier. The treaty, which opened West Tennessee for settlement, was signed on October 19, 1818, by Isaac Shelby and Andrew Jackson for the president of the United States, Mr. Monroe, and the chiefs and head men for the Chickasaw Indians. This territory was allowed to the Indians as hunting-ground for two years longer,
It was not till about 1820 that the whites were given an opportunity to settle within the territory. The rapid progress of settlement is seen from the fact that the courts were organized in the Fall of 1823, and the first census, 1830. This rapid settlement came in from North and South Carolina, Virginia, north Alabama, and, largely, Middle Tennessee. Source: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnhardem/history.htm
