The Reeves Project Learning Series

This is one of a series of pages to guide you through a single activity. The previous activity was collaborating on your Mentor Team's Talk_ Page. To see a list of the first six parts in our First Steps guide, click here.

Searching in TRP

There are several ways to look for information within TRP. This page will focus on the two search tools located on the right hand side of your screen.

Find text within Content

On the upper right left corner of the page is the Find box. This is the upper of the two search boxes located on that side of the page. (It used to be on the right but moved to the left when we upgraded the underlying tiki software in 1q2018).

This tool permits searching for words inside the content of wiki pages and comments made about those wiki pages. Try entering the word "blacksmith" (without the quotation marks) into the Find box and click the adjacent Go button. At the time of writing these notes, at least three results were returned.

Feel free to click on any of the pages that happen to catch your attention and note that your search term is highlighted.

Experiment further with alternate queries such as "carpenter" and "fareham".

Note that the Find facility is not case sensitive. The terms "cart", "CART" and "CaRt" all produce the same results.

The current FIND facility is not as sophisticated as some search engines you may have used elsewhere. It matches words exactly. So a search for "category" will not find wiki pages containing "categories". But searching for the stem of the common word "categor" will result in matches of both words and also "categorical" and "categorise" etc.

Note the Find facility does not search the content of any MS Word or PDF files that may have been attached to a wiki page.

At times it can be useful to open another browser tab and use Google to search for content within TRP. For example, search Google for "site:TheReevesProject.org Eling -marriage" (without the quotation marks) should find pages mentioning "Eling" and exclude those mentioning "marriage".

Search by Wiki Page Name

Also at the top right side of the page (in the right column) is the Search Wiki Page Names box.-- This is the lower of the two search boxes.--

This tool is specifically for finding words forming part of a wiki page name. If it is selected, deselect the option "Exact match" before typing anything in the search box.

The convention for naming pages about people within TRP is that the family name precedes the given name(s). Further, it is a restriction of the Tiki software that spaces should not be used within wiki page names. Space must be replaced by the underscore character.

So to find all wiki pages about individuals named Israel Reeves, enter "Reeves_Israel" (without the quotation marks) into the Search Wiki Page Names box and click the Go button.

The results returned will likely be a mixture of what TRP terms "Gleanings", where the wiki page name begins with a date in yyyymmdd format and "Person Pages" which begin, for example, "Reeves_Israel_"

Again, feel free to click on any of the pages that happen to catch your attention and experiment further with searches for names occurring within your Reeves family.

Some Background

Since there are likely to be many individuals sharing the same surname and given name combination within TRP a random number suffix is appended to each wiki page name. You'll learn more about naming Person Pages later.

It is possible to refine the results of a wiki page name search by using the Categories drop down box. So you might be tempted to refine the search and choose the People category. But in doing so you may miss seeing the page for your ancestor, because categories are manually assigned by TRP community members and at times even the most diligent of us forget to correctly categorise a page.

Next Steps

In the next part we'll help you to create a Person Pages for one of your Reeves ancestors.

And Finally

Don't worry about making mistakes as your mentors will help you to straighten things out. It's all about learning and experimenting at this stage; mistakes are expected - we made enough of them when we were starting out (and still do).

That's all for this time,
