TRP Helping Out - Part 50 - DNA Groups Overview

TRP_Helping_Out_Part_50

The Reeves Project Learning Series

The First Steps pages for new TRP Community Members were designed to be worked through in sequence. The second series of guidance pages are the “Moving Along” pages which introduce some of the more advanced topics and ways of working within TRP. The "Moving Along" pages are intended to be of value to all community members. The pages are generally free standing, with larger topics split over a couple of linked pages. The third series of guidance pages within TRP Learning Series are the "Helping Out" pages which are aimed at the more experienced community members and those who are just curious as to why we do things in a particular way.

Helping Out with .. DNA Groups

This page is one of eight pages in the Helping Out - Part 5x sequence (50-56 and 59) relating to our DNA Group pages. Each of these eight pages is self-contained.

The aim of this page is to highlight the purpose of each page within a DNA Group. It is intended to be an aide-mémoire to DNA Group Coordinators and to provide an introduction to prospective DNA Group Coordinators. This page also provides a link to each of the six pages in this Helping Out - Part 5x sequence which guides a DNA Group Coordinator in that page's maintenance. The final page in this Helping Out - Part 5x sequence is an aide-mémoire to the project's admins in how to create a new DNA Group.

Note that the design of the pages within a DNA Group has evolved over time and we don't always rush to bring all the groups up to the latest design iteration. So if you're reading this page alongside a specific DNA Group that may be the reason for any discrepancies.

DNA Group Pages - Overview

The purpose of each page within a DNA Group is outlined in the following table.

Wiki Page Name

Purpose
Maintenance
Guide
DNA_Group_nn The group's   Root Page
(1) Identifies the Group Coordinator
(2) Identifies the DNA Donors
TRP_Helping_Out_Part_51
DNA_Group_nn_Home The group's   Home Page
(1) provides space for the Group Coordinator to summarise what is presently known about the group's members and their most recent common ancestor(s)
(2) has a link to the group's Discussion Page
(3) has links to any FamilyOf pages related to the group and links to any Lines of Descent provided by the DNA Donors.
TRP_Helping_Out_Part_52
DNA_Group_nn_News The group's   News Page
(1) provides space for the Group Coordinator to announce news items concerning this DNA Group.
(1a) It should reflect new members joining the group (once they've been assigned to the Group on FtDNA - TRP always follows the lead of the Reeves DNA project) and
(1b) share announcements of new research linked to this group, with links to their TRP Person Pages.
(2) has links to the Goup's Discussion Page
TRP_Helping_Out_Part_53
talk_DNA_Group_nn The group's   Discussion Page
(1) provides space for all TRP members to engage in discussion about the DNA Group and its research, most recent common ancestor(s).
The group coordinator is expected to curate this page in line with the guidance found of TRP_Moving_Along_Part_21 which is common to all talk pages within TRP.
TRP_Helping_Out_Part_54
DNA_Group_nn_Members The group's   TRP Members Page
(1) Provides space to identify any TRP member who has a proven familial link to the progenitors of this DNA Group.
Unlike the Root Page which identifies just the DNA Donors, this page can show all those TRP community members, both the DNA Donors who are TRP community members and those TRP community members related to this group.
By virtue of inter marriage, some TRP community member may have a valid claim to be listed on more than one group's TRP Members Page.
TRP_Helping_Out_Part_55
DNA_Group_nn_Lines The group's   Lines Page
(1) lists the donor provided Lines of Descent. Each line of descent is entered on its own page and is automatically listed here when it has been correctly included in the DNA Group's structure.
