Changes to Left Navigation Column

Changes to Left Navigation Column

What's Changing?

The current Menu will be removed from the left column and replaced with two new items.
  • Firstly there will be a new "Menu", which will focused to TRP content rather than the Wiki functionality of the current Menu. It will contain links to the more frequently visited wiki pages and also feature a link to a new wiki page aimed at making it easier to add new wiki pages.
  • Secondly we'll add "My Bookmarks", where your personal Wiki bookmarks will be readily to hand.

When will it Change?

This change is currently planned to be made on Monday 31 October.

Why are we doing this?

The current menu in the left column is a repetition of all the TikiWiki related functionality found in the tabbed horizontal navigation bar. This duplication serves no useful purpose (and when we started out with TRP we had no idea how to turn it off!)

By adding a few links to our content should make navigating within TRP easier and quicker for community members. This is particularly true since the new links in the left column will be visible from every page within TRP. It will also reduce the number of times one has to visit the Wiki Home Page, so reducing the load on our server and reducing the time you need to wait for that page to appear simply to allow you to click on one of the navigation links contained within the Wiki Home Page to go elsewhere in the Wiki.

We realise the eight links we've chosen may not be everybody's favourites, which is where "My Bookmarks" comes in. This is not a new feature, we're just making it more accessible. We'll provide more information on its usage closer to the planned launch.

What do I need to do?

There is nothing you must do, but if you currently rely on the Menu in the left column, you might want to start making more use of the horizontal navigation bar, which provides all the same functionality. If you hover your mouse over the word "Menu" in the left column, the toggle icon will appear to the right of the word Menu. Clicking on this icon either hides or shows the menu, reversing its current state. In preparation for the change, you might want to hide the content of this menu so you get used to relying on the horizontal navigation bar.
