March 2016 - A DNA Success

A DNA Success Story

                  by Beverly Watson

TRP normally follows the lead of the Reeves DNA Project, only adding information after Barry advises the Reeves mailing list. But on this occasion we're going to share a scoop.

When new TRP member Tim Reeves joined the project back in October of 2015, he began to discuss his search for the family of his Jackson Reeves born about 1815 in South Carolina. He had already noticed that his Jackson had been misidentified in many trees on Ancestry and other internet sources and he wanted to document the correct information. So in order to be certain which Reeves family Jackson was descended from, Tim joined the Reeves DNA Project  [see footnote]  and submitted his DNA kit to Family Tree DNA. Over the course of the next several months while waiting for the DNA results, he spent a lot of time searching the historical records in both South Carolina and Georgia for Jackson.

We found the will of Jackson’s father-in-law in Anderson County, South Carolina. The will of James Webster named his daughter Elizabeth Reeve and her husband Andrew J. spelling the name Reeve - with no “S”. William Reeve had settled in Abbeville SC after the Revolution later moving on to Georgia and records of his son George Washington Reeve named a son Andrew Jackson Reeve born in 1815. In Georgia, this family lived in close proximity to Tim’s known ancestors and there were too many connections between the families to ignore. Finally, in the past week Tim’s DNA results are complete and he is a match to participants in DNA Group 10 who descend from William Reeve and George Washington Reeve. This is another very rewarding and successful incidence of using DNA and historical research to correctly document a Reeve(s) lineage. Congratulations to Tim on finding his roots. We’ll be looking forward to all the new TRP pages he’ll add for his family.

Wiki Stats - End February 2016

The total number of pages in the Wiki (as at 1 March 2016) now stands at 6584 (previously 6572, 6564, 6548), an increase of 12 pages during the past month.     Of these 1285 pages (was 1283, 1283, 1283) begin with number and are most probably a date related gleaning.     We currently have 2736 wiki pages categorised as "People", of which 2320 begin with the letter "R".

TRP Users

We ended February 2016 with 239 user accounts registered with TRP, a decrease of one. Whilst we've had several individuals complete our Join Us form this month, none have (so far) taken the next step in their registration. So there have been no new user accounts created. Please don't be shy, there is bunch of friendly and welcoming folks here. Every so often we do a bit of housekeeping (not as often as we probably should because we'd rather chasing down ancestors than doing wiki admin) and after due notice remove accounts for users who never completed the second stage of their registration. Hence the drop of one this month.

In the past three months 29 members have logged in to TRP (previously 31, 33, 34 members) and over the past twelve months 73 members (was 76, 77, 77) have logged in. As a community member you are missing out if you just browse without bothering to log in.

Foot Note - Rootsweb

As is noted elsewhere around the web, RootsWeb, which hosts the results of the Reeves DNA Project has been off-line since 26 Feb 2016. Their current expectation "...is to have the site back up and running on or around March 15, 2016."   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/   retrieved on 02March2016.
