Location and Adjacent Counties

Berkshire is an inland county in the south of England.     The River Thames forms it northern boundary, separating it from Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire and it is bordered by Surrey to the south east, Hampshire to the south and Wiltshire to the west.

The ancient county town was Abingdon, but it was superseded by the town of Reading in 1867.
