Transcript

In the name of God Amen I George Ryves of Ranston in the County of Dorsett Esquire being well and considering the incertainety of this mortall life revoakeing all former wills doe make this my last will and tesament in manner and forme following
First I resigne my soule into the hands of the Almighty God the Creator of all in assured hope of a joyfull resurrection att the last day and my body I remitt to the earthe from whence it was taken to bee decently buriied in the parish church of Iwerne Courtney att the discrecion of my executors hereafter named, not exceeding in expence two hundred and fifty pounds (from the side of my ownestate and soo along under the Pulpitt but not soe neare my deare father as to disturbe his bones who lyeth on the left hand by the left end of the said seate and I desire here may bee three flatt stones one on my father one on my selfe and the other on my children who lye on the left hand of my father close by my wives seate with some short inscriptionss.
Item I give to the poore of the parishes of Pimperne North Cheriton and Iwerne Courtney five pounds to each parish to bee payd within six moneths after my decease att the discretion of my executors after named.
Item I give to my brother Henry Rose and to his sonnes George and Thomas and to his daughter Anne Pracotte and to every the child of them the said George Thomas and Anne that shall be liveing att my death the sume of twenty pounds a peece And I will that the receipts of the fathers and mothers of the children of my Nephews and niece Roses shall be a sufficient discharge for their childrens legacyes.
Item I give to my cosens John Jones John West Anne Scruby Jane Tanner Millicent John and Millicent Elderton the sume of two pounds a peece in those legacies to bee payd within twelve monethes after my decease.
Item I give to my nephew Thomas Haysome and to my neeces Anne Teodosia and Elizabeth Haysome the sume of one hundred pounds a peece which said legacyes I desire may bee payd att their ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of marriage which shall first happen after my decease and if any of them happen to dye before their legacyes bee payd that to remaine to the survivors.
Item I give to my loveing wife about fifty pounds that I have in old Gold and the use of all my stocke of cattle corne and other stocke whatsoever that shall bee on my farme of Ranston being her joynture and the use of all my household stuffe plate furniture and all other my household goods which shall bee in my house att Ranston aforesaid for and dureing her widdowhood only to bee delivered to her by an inventory indented betweene her and my executors hereafter named provided my said loveing wife doe att the time of the delivery of the same give unto my said executors sufficient security to have the same or soe much other goods and stocke of the same vallue (ordinary usage and fire excepted) unto my executors hereafter named att the time of her death or next marriage which shall first happen and in case my said loveing wife shall neglect or refuse soe to doe then my executors to dispose and sell the said goods and stocke aforesaid and then in that case I give my said loveing wife the old gould aforesaid and my coach harnes and coack horses and all things thereto pertaining the bedd and bedding where we usually pay two payre of sheets and pillow lyes to the same belonging fower ordinary towells and fower cubbord clothes two board clothes and one dozen of Diaper Napkins the canole cupp and porrenger to it belonging the second best tankard both gievn by my Lord Stowell the sugar box and two silver plates both given her by mee the day of our intermarriage All her owne Rings and Jewells and all her owne wearing apparrell whatsoever.
Item to all my servants which shall have lived with mee more than one whole yeare att the time of my death I give halfe a yeares wages and to all other my servants I give one quarter of a yeares wages a peece besides what shall bee due to them att the time of my death to bee payd unto them when they shall goe off their service respectively and none of them to putt off without a quarters warneing.
Item I give to all my male servants outside mourneing of broad cloth of tenn shillings the yard to make them coates and breeches
Item I give to my female servants outside mourneing of searge?.
Item to me neces Anne Theodosia and Elizabeth Haysome (if liveing with mee) mourneing of Crape?
Item to my loveing wife fine cloth to make her a mourneing gowne those blackes to bee payd for out of the two hundred and fifty pounds allowed for my funerall expences
Item I give to my well beloved friends Thomas Ealre of Chaborow Robert Seymer of Hanford and Thomas Chafin of Chettle Esqr to Robert Pitt and Nicholas Ingram of Blandford southemen the sume of tenn pounds a peece to buy themselves mourening and doe appount and make them the sayd Thomas Ealre Robert Seymer Thomas Chafin Robert Pitt and Nicholas Ingram executors of this my last will and testament. And my will is ? and the survivours and and ? of them shall from time to time reinburse themselves out of the moneys hereafter given all such sumes or sumes of money which hee or they shall bee put unto lay out or susteyne in execution of this will and in case any money shall bee lost or any other emergency shall happen and fall uppon them or either of them for or by reason of this will or trust in them reposed then I will that they shall bee noe looser? ? but that every such losse shall bee made upp unto them out of the moneys which shall come to their names by vertue ? will and trust for as they are to have noe advantage by the will it would bee very unreasonable they should have any losse for my meaneing is that the surplusage of my whole estate personall (after my debts legacyes and personall expences discharged) should bee imployed and disposed by my executors aforesayd as is hereafter expressed and declared.
Item I give to the Right honorable John Earle of Bristoll to the most Reverend Robert Lord Bishopp of Gloucester and to all the Deputy Liverenants and justices of the place of the County of Dorsett which shall bee resident and usually liveing in the said County of Dorsett att the tyme of my death and to all my brothers and their wives to my cozen Bennett and his wife to my cozen Bertley and his wife to my Lord Stawell Giles Eyre to my sister Ryves of Hanford to my sister Doctor com? executors and their wives (not before in this corcowerned? to my cozens Leonard and Robert Wesfteed Arthur Russell Anne Soulch Margaret Jones John and William Jones Anne Scruby Jane Tanner William Elderton Jude Ryves Richard Ryves William Hoster to my sister Chissincce? to George Strangeways and his wife Bernard Min and his wife the widdowe of John Ryves and the Major John Ryves and to my friends Sr John Moccon? George Pitt Thomas Denruddocke Thomas Pyle Samuell Pitt Richard Swayne William Wake Seymer Bowman Robert Crouch and to all of them liveing att my death one gould ring of twenty shillings with this motto prepare to follow E R.
Item I doe by this give unto my executors before named all my estate in ready money mortgages bonds bills securityes debt and all other my personall estate goods and stock whatsoever to this intent and trust neverthelesse that they and the survivour of them shall after my debts legacyes and funerall expences discharged as aforesaid out of the remainder of my said personall estate lay out and purchase about ninety or one hundred pounds by the yeare of good lands inheritance as near Blandford as my bee with conveniency which said lands soe to bee purchased shall bee in trust to bee imployed from time to time for the yearely maintenance of such poore persons as shall bee elected and chosen from time to time into my Almeshouse in Blandford in such manner as is hereafter directed and for the repaireing of the said Almeshouse from time to time as need shall require and my will is that every of the said tenn poore persons which shall from time to time bee elected into the said Almshouse shall have allowed them from time to time weekely? out of the rents and profitts of the lands soe to bee purchased as aforesayd two shillings and six pence by the weeke and alsoe a Gowne or other Garment a peece of Groy cloath or searge? every yeare against the feast of all saints att the discetion of the persons hereafter named to bee electors and Governors of the said house and poore people And if there shall bee more money raised out of the rents and profitts of the lands soe to bee purchased as aforesaid then the two shillings and six pence by the weeke to the tenn poore people and their annuall Garments and the repayrs? of the said house amount unto them I will and my desire is that my said electors and Governors hereafter named and their successors for ever shall keepe and improve the same untill it shall use a sufficient provision for the rebuilding of the said Almeshouse in case affire should happen and when they shall have raised the sume of two hundred pounds as a Bancke for that purpose then my will is that they imploy the proceed of the said two hundred pounds and the future yearely remaine of the groweing annuall profitts towards the bindeing out of boyes Apprentices to sea or otherwise as they shall thinke fitt being natives of Blandford or Pimperne after the proportion of eight of Blandford to two of Pimperne which proportion I have used in setting the present poore persons in the said Almeshouse I doe alsoe desire that they may bee natives of Blandford and Pimperne and none to bee elected into the said house but single persons and of att least fifty yeares of age.
Item I desire my said executors untill lands can bee soe purchased as aforesaid for the weekely maintenance of the said term poore persons that they and the survivor will take care for the payment of the said weekly allowance and for their garments and for the repaire of the said house out of the proceed of my personall estate which shall come to their hands.
Item mil will and meaneing is and hearby this declare it that after my said executors have payd my debts legacyes and funerall expences and have alsoe purchased lands of inheritance for the support and maintenance of the said poore persons that then they and the survivor of them shall pay the remainder and surplusage of the said personall estate hereinbefore bequeathed unto such persons as I shall settle my estate of lands uppon towards the defraying two charges and sumes of money which I shall thinke fitt to charge my lands with all I meane those persons who shall by my settlement come next into possession of my reall estate after my decease And my further will and meaneing is and I doe hereby direct nominate and appoint the present and future owners of the farmes of Ranston Damary Brianston Iwerne Courtney Chaborow handford chittle Robert Pitt dureing his life And the Bayleiffe of the Burrough of Blandford for the time being for ever to bee lectors and Governors of the sayd Almeshouse and to elect and governe the said poore persons (videlicet) eight out of Blandford and two out of Pimprene and soe forever proportionally as occasion shall bee either by death or removall of any of them or other vacancy whatsoever and my further will and request is that the Bayliffe of the Burrough of Blandford for the time being and set forever will collect and gather the rents and profitts of the lands set to bee purchsed as aforesaid ald alsoe pay the siad poore people their said weekly payments as is before herein mentioned and alsoe provide their annuall ear ments and order the necessary repayres of the said house and att one end of two yeare to bee amountable to the electors and Governors and pay over the surplussage of money hee shall have in his hands unto such succeeding Bayliffe as shall bee elected after him by the said Borrough of Blandford for ever. And or his trouble herein I give yearly to the said Bayliffe the sume of fower nobles as my acknowledgment for his paines which I desire may be acceptable And I Lastly desire my said electors and Governers or some of them every yeare to examine signe and allow of every yeares Amount attt the time of the old Bayliffs goeing out of his said office and then to deliver the said Account and the ballance thereof over to the new Bayliffe which said Accounts I desire may ensred? and kept in a booke appointed for that purpose in witnesse whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale to this my last will and testament being written with my owne hand and conteyned in fower sheets of paper every sheet signed and sealed by mee this Nineth day of May one thousand six hundred eighty five and the first of King James the second.

A codicill to bee annexed to my last will and testament and to bee anounced as parte and parcell thereof.
I doe hereby give and devise unto my three loveing neeces Anne Haysome Theodocia Haysome and Elizabeth Haysome the sume of one thousand pounds which is oweing from Francis Rutterell? Esquire unto me uppon securityes to bee equally divided betweene them together with the sole benefitt of the same securityes.
Item I give to my Kinfolkes Anne Foster Widdowe Margaret Jones wife of William Joens John West and my servant Robert Willis the sume of five pounds a peece
Item to my landlord Mr Needham and his wife for the trouble and paines they have had I give the sume of tenn pounds to bestowe in Rings or plate out of which I desire them to bestowe twenty shillings on their servants in witnesse whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the sixth day March in the Yeare of our Lord God one Thousand six hundred Eighty Eight.
