Transcript

Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Bottom of Amelia County of the one part & Patty Rives of Henry County of the other part Witnesseth that the said Thomas Bottom for and in consideration of one hundred pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid doth bargain sell make over & deliver by these presents One Negro girl named Edy free from the clame or clames of any person or persons whatsoever To have and to hold the said negro girl the right title and clear possestion to the said Patty Rives her heirs and assigns forever as Witness my hand & seal this 28th Day of March 1780

Alexander Rives }At a Court held for Henry County on the 25th Day of May 1780 The within Bill of Sale was proved by the Oaths of the witnesses thereto to be the act & Deed of the within named Thomas Bottom & the same was ordered to be recorded by the Court

Commentary

Note that although the Alexander Rives who witnessed is almost certainly Frederick's son, he would have only been about 15 or 16 at the time.
