On 17 Jul 1767, Peter Copeland was listed as a tithable in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Richard Copeland, was also listed as his tithe that year which would establish that he was at least 16 years of age. Richard Copeland is also found on the tax lists of Henry County, newly created from Pittsylvania, during the years 1782 to 1785.

The fact that Richard Copeland disappeared from the Henry County records around 1786 may be an indication that he traveled to Georgia with his Dunn relatives of his wife Sarah who left Henry County in the 1780s. were found in Jasper County by the 1820 census.
