Reeves Y-DNA Project Updates - October 2005 [1]

This update embraces two related posts, the first made on 10 October and the second, a day later, on 11 October 2005

Hello All,

I wanted to update everyone on a number of exciting developments within the Reeves DNA Surname Project. As most already know, this project uses DNA testing of the Y chromosome to help with genealogical research. By finding out which participants have matching DNA, we can more easily determine where to research for common ancestors within our family trees.

The latest developments are the following:

First, our Reeves Project now has 31 members! The kits from our two newest members should soon begin testing by the Family Tree DNA lab. It takes about six to eight to process the kits, so if you are considering joining the project and would like the results before the end of the year, request your test kit now and return them soon.

Second, our project has its first international member! We have a member that joined the Reeves Project who lives in Australia. This project was specifically designed to help establish genealogical links between Reeves throughout the world to help determine how we all connect. We would like to extend a warm welcome to David Robert Reeve and invite other Reeves cousins from around the globe to join the Reeves DNA Surname Project.

Third, we have a new match and a new group! We have an exact 25 marker match between
Kit 28591 for Charles Sherman Reeves
Kit 41599 for Richard Allan Reeves
They have a genetic distance of 0. This close a match provides an 85% probability that their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) is within the last 200 years, and a 94% probability that their MRCA is within the last 300 years. We congratulate Charles and Richard on their match, and ask that they begin comparing their Reeves lines to determine their common ancestor. We also ask that they e-mail their Reeves lines to Barry so he can post them along with the match on the Reeves Project Website. This match now forms the fifth unique group within the Reeves DNA project.

Fourth, we have a new match to the Reeves Group 03! We have an exact 12 marker match between Robert Reeves and Group 03. This now brings the total members in Group 03 to six. This means that through the Reeves DNA Surname Project we have been able to connect six Reeves researchers that share a common Reeves ancestor who otherwise would not have been able to definitively prove their relatedness. This is precisely what the project was designed to do! I congratulate Robert and all of Group 03 on the match and ask that he e-mail his Reeves line to Barry as soon as possible.

Fifth, we have our first high resolution match! We have a 36 out of 37 marker match between
Kit 18952 for Melvin Lee Reeves
Kit 33958 for Johnie Lee Reeves
1 They have a genetic distance of 1. This close a match provides an 87% probability of a MRCA within 200 years, and a 97% probability of a MRCA within 300 years. After initially finding a match on their 25 marker tests, they decided to have their results further refined by FTDNA to include markers 26 through 37. This means that the Y chromosome of these two members was analyzed at 37 specific locations, and was found to match exactly at 36 out of 37 locations, and at one location the values were different by just one step. This is about as close a match as current testing methods at Family Tree DNA can provide. Having a greater number of markers can prove a more precise match, which can narrow the time frame in which to look for a common ancestor. Congratulations to Johnie & Melvin!

As you can see, the Reeves DNA Surname Project has yielded some interesting and helpful results. We will continue to keep folks posted on our progress. I want to stress that matches only come from mass participation in this project. Some participants have had to wait 9 to 12 months after getting their results before getting a match within the Reeves project. Others have joined the project (myself included), and are still patiently waiting for a match to them self or their Reeves relative to appear in the Reeves project. Greater successes will come as we continue to grow, so I urge any of you who have been watching the formation and development of the Reeves Project to join us now or diligently seek out your closest male Reeves relative that can represent your family line in this exciting area of genealogical research.

You can join the Reeves Project at the following link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?code=S73785&Group=Reeves 2

If you have joined the Reeves project and need to submit your Reeves line, here is Barry Reeves e-mail link: barry_reeves (a) bellsouth.net

As always, feel free to contact me or Barry with questions regarding the Reeves DNA Surname Project.

Best Regards,

David LeRoux

P.S. Just in case any of you were wondering why a guy named LeRoux is working on the Reeves Project, it is because my mother is a Reeves. I had my mother's brother take the test to represent my Reeves family in this project. I am very interested in my Reeves lineage and hope that the Reeves Surname Project will help connect me with other Reeves cousins.

All,

The Reeves DNA Project website has been updated with the latest test results from Family Tree DNA. Several new family lines have also been added. I would like to ask that all test participants verify their information and let me know if I keyed anything incorrectly. There are still several test participants that have not yet sent in their family line information. I encourage you to send them in to me as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that the DNA test results are only part of the whole picture. Without the family line information, it is difficult to see how we all fit together.

I would like to thank David Leroux for his encouraging and very informative email to the group yesterday. I think we are really starting to see the results pay off now. We now have five distinct groups and several more test results coming in the near future. For those test participants who have not yet seen a match, please don't get discouraged. I believe it is simply a matter of time. With these new participants coming in, there is a good chance that we will see some more matches soon.

Thanks again for everyone's support for this important project. We are building a treasure for future generations.

Best Regards,

Barry Reeves

2         Although the Reeves Group Project page at FtDNA still includes project member prices for the Y-DNA12 and Y-DNA25 test, neither now are recommended. As our group has grown, these test no longer provide sufficient markers to identify one's lineage/group. The entry level Y-DNA test (as at May 2019) is the Y-DNA37 test.
