In 1850, David was a carpenter, living with his family next door to Zadoc Reeve in Vigo County. The 1883 will of Zadoc includes an item "To the wife of William McNutt (a former wife of my son Daniel M Reeve deceased)." The wife of William McNutt was David's widow Lousia. His will (at least the recorded version) incorrectly refers to his son as Daniel instead of David.

The family apparently moved to Bloomington, Illinois for a short period, where his first wife died.
