FATAL FALL AT BELCHAMP
On Monday Dr. Harrison, coroner, held an inquest on Edward Reeve, 73, labourer, Gestingthorpe Road Cottages, Belchamp Walter, who died on Saturday evening from the effects of a fall. Deceased was on the top of a ladder thatching a straw stack on March 30, when he reached out for some string to bind the straw to the stack. He slipped, and fell to the ground, a distance of about 20ft. He sustained two fractured ribs, and suffered severely from shock. Dr. James Bromley was called, and attended the injured man till his death.
William Reeve, the son, said he was helping his father to thatch a stack on Mr. Seager’s farm. Witness was drawing straw from another, stack , and left the deceased on the top of a ladder against the stack he was thatching. Wituess later heard groans from the foot of the stack, and saw his father lying on his back on the ground, with his foot caught in the fourth stave of the ladder. Deceased said, "I slipped from the top of the ladder when reaching for some string." Witness took him home. The distance from the top of the ladder to the bottom w 18 to 20 feet. Deceased left a widow and eleven children. The ladder was a sound one.
Mr. Leonard Seagers, Crowhurst Farm, Belchamp Walter, stated that he employed the deceased for a few hours occasionally. On Monday he engaged him and his son to thatch a stack.
Dr. J. Bromley said deceased's third and fourth ribs on the left side were fractured. Deceased was suffering from shock, pneumonia supervened, and death took place on Saturday.
The Coroner returned a verdict of Accidental death, due to a fall from a ladder.
