DEATH OF THE REV. E. J. REEVE
We regret to announce the death, on Friday, Aug. 18th, of the Rev. Edward James Reeve, for many years rector of Stondon Massey, near Brentwood. The deceased, who was 72 years of age, was formerly of St. Peter's College, Cambridge, and took his B. A. degree in 1844. He was ordained n the same year by the Archbishop (Howley) of Canterbury, and was curate of Ide Hill, near Sundridge, Kent, from that date until 1846. In the following year he accepted the curacy of Little Waltham, in this county, and in 1849 he was presented to the living of Stondon. He was Rural Dean of Ongar from 1860 to 1890, when he resigned. The deceased gentleman leaves one son, the Rev. E. H. Lisle Reeve, curate of St. Botolph's, Colchester.
Most of the business establishments in Ongar were closed on Wednesday afternoon, when the funeral of the deceased gentleman took place on Stondon Churchyard. Despite the showery weather, the church was filled with a sorrowing congregation, and many persons were shut out through want of room. The deceased clergyman was, during his lifetime, averse to funerals of an elaborate character, and in deference to his sentiments, the interment was conducted in as simple a manner as possible.
