James Reeve is not a name frequently found among records from Essex mid-1600s. We know that John Reeve who was present in the Bocking and north-central area of Essex had a son named James who is mentioned in the will of his father John Reeve of Bocking from 1659. There is a baptism entry from Stambourne from 1639 which may match this James. In addition, a James Reeve of Sible Hedingham appears in records associating him with the Bocking family. In 1672, a Jonathan Reeve and James Reeve witnessed an indictment of Edmund Peacocke of Bocking who stole some horses belonging to James and Jonathan. In 1676, "James Reeve yeoman, both of Hedingham Sible, and Joseph Reeve of Gosfield yeoman" were involved in a court case together. "James Reeve gentleman and Mary his wife" were involved in a court case from 1676 which seemed to involve many others from the Hedingham area. Later in midsummer 1676, he along with "Jonathan Reeve of Bocking, yeomen" was to answer for using public funds from his office of surveyor for private use. In 1693, James Reeve of Sible Hedingham was involved in a case in which support was ordered for a bastard begotten of Daniel Bacon of Stambourne upon Sarah Davis of Birdbrook singlewoman. In 1697, James Reeve and John Reeve of Sible Hedingham had to answer for refusing to pay George Wade. In 1699, James Reeve is said to be a constable of Sible Hedingham. The same year is described as yeoman, and accused along with Robert Olliver the butcher of assaulting Samuel Emsden.
