James wrote his will on 11 Nov 1788 and it was proved 24 Dec 1789 in the Suffolk County Surrogate's Court. He mentions his wife Anna and children "eldest son James," "third son John," "daughter Harmony." He mentions goods that his wife was to "dispose of amongst my four children excepting James and John." And he mentions the "meadow of brother Isaac."

James, his wife and their son Jeremiah are buried in the Mattituck Presbyterian Church cemetery. His headstone reads: "In Memory of/Esqr James Reeve/who Departed/this Life June 8/AD 1789 In the/56 Year of/his Age." His wife's reads: "In Memory of/Anna Relict of/James Reeve Esq/who died Feb 3d 1800/Aged 64 years."
