Narrative

Children of John Reeve:
  1. John Reeve

In John's will, written in 1680, he mentions:
  • my daughter in Law Ann the wife of my sonn John Reeve deceased
  • my three grandchildren John Reeve Edward Reeve & Frances Reeve
  • my Brother William Reeve
  • my son in law Guss? Pepper

In context, the grandchildren appear to be children of the deceased son John. This appears to be correct based on parish records.

From Willingale Doe, St Christopher, Essex Parish Register:
  • John Reeve of the parish of Willingale Doe was buried February ye 23d in what was made of sheeps wool only & affidavit thereof made & delivered Febr 24th

The following records from the Essex Archives would appear to concern this John and his son John:
  • 27 May 1657: Recognizance of Joshua Argent yeoman; to answer, neing constble of Willingable Doe, his contemptuous refusing to execute a warrant for taking a distree on the goods of John Reeve senior and junior of the same, yeoman. Fees unpaid. (Court in Session: Sessions Roll Midsummer 1657, Q/SR 372/54)
  • 31 and 29 January 1657: Recognizance of John Reeve senior of willingale Doe, Edw. Collins and Tho. Oyn, both of Fyfield, yeomen, each to stand to such order of the Court as may be made touching his killing and carrying away four fallow deer "at two severall tymes" out of writtle park belonging to Lord Petre. Fees unpaid. (Court In Session: Sessions Roll Easter 1657, Q/SR 371/48-50)
  • Indictment of Whereas Peter Whetcombe esq., by warrant dated 14 April 1657, to the constables of Willingale doe commanded them to levy of the goods and chattels of John Reeve senior and junior of the same, the sum of £30 spiece for their several offences of killing of fallow deer of William Lord Petre in Writtle Park, against an Act of 1651 intituled 'An Act to prevent killing of deer', and whereas, 17 April, the warrant was delivered there to Joseph Agent of the same yeoman, yet he hath neglected and refused to execute it. (Court In Session: Sessions Roll Epiphany 1659, Q/SR 378/9

Research Notes

This may be the son of John Reeve baptized in 1606. That John's will also mentions a son William who would be the one referred to in this John's will as brother. There was a John who married a Grace in 1631 in Willingale Spain and his children were baptized in Willingale Doe who may be this John. There was also a John with wife Sarah whose chilren were baptized in the 1630s who may be this John. Further research is needed to distinguish and understand who these were.
