John's father died in 1863 and John is listed as head of household in 1870 in Pleasant, Laporte County, Indiana with his mother Anna (66), sister Emma (25), along with Jennie (9) and Mary Higgins (7) and Asaph Dempsey (18).

In 1880, he was still in Pleasant, age 47, a farmer. Mary E. Boys (30) was his housekeeper and she apparently had her daughter Maud (3) with her. George P. Brooster (58) was laborer.

In 1900, he was living with his sister Frances Hobbie.

OCTOGENARIAN IS FOUND DEAD IN HIS BED AT AN EARLY HOUR THIS MORNING
John A. Reeve, a well known resident of Kankakee was found dead in bed at 7 o'clock this morning at his apartments in the rooming house of Mrs Augusta B?, 296? North Chicago avenue. Heart attack had resulted fatally. Edmund Cheeseboro, employed as janitor at the Masonic temple, also occupying a room at the apartment house, instituted search when Mr. Reeve failed to appear at his usual breakfast hour.
Mr. Reeve retired about 9 o'clock last night, as was his custom. He had eaten a hearty supper and apparently was in usual health. Mr. Reeve had not complained of any heart disturbance during Wednesday. He had been in declining health owing to his age, however, for some time past. Mr Reeve was 81 years old.
Native of New York.
The deceased was born at Bath, N. Y., Sept 26, 1832. He went to Indiana, setting on a farm in Laporte county in the year 1827. He 1890 Mr. Reeve came to Kankakee. He had held permanent residence in this city since that year.
Mr. Reeve had not been active for several years past, due to his increasing age. He was a man of string convictions, politically and religiously.
Coroner L. E. Penoville? conducted an inquest, this afternoon at 1:30, at his office. Verdict of death due to heart disease was returned.
Two brothers, Budd Reeve, of Buxton, N. D. and J. S. Reeve of Plymouth, Ind., with a sister, Mrs. S. B. Culberton, of Canton, S. D., survive the deceased.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
