Rumsey's birth and death are only recorded on his headstone in Willoughby, OH.
He first appears in the printed record listed among the children of Joel Reeve (1755-1831) with the incorrect spelling "Rumney".
In The Records of Southampton Vol. 5, "Rumsey Reeves" included in a list of school pupils in North Sea School that is dated 1795.
Rumsey begins appearing in the records of Rensselaerville in 1815 when his first son is born.
Records held by the Rensselaerville Historical Society list him as Town Constable in 1825.
Rumsey is present in the 1820 Census for Renssaelerville next to his brother Bethuel Reeve (1783-1868).
He is mentioned in the biographical profile of son Joel Reeve (1823-1909) included in The History of the Western Reserve. This book details Rumsey's courtship, marriage, children and relocation to Willoughby, OH.
Research Notes
Parents: Rumsey's father is documented, but his mother is less clear. Anna Wines was married to Joel Reeve (1755-1831). There is a record of their marriage in 1800 at Mattituck. However, Rumsey was born in 1790. According to her headstone, Anna died at age 90 in 1862. If this is correct, she would have been old enough to be Rumsey's mother. There is no other record or evidence of an earlier marriage, but the lateness of the marriage date is puzzling.Sources
