Narrative

Albert George REEVES is the first son and fourth known child of Albinus REEVES and his wife Lydia (nee BURT) . He was baptised in the Parish Church of St Mary, Motcombe, Dorset during August 1812 when he was noted as the son of Albinas (sic) and Lydia.

In December 1836, Albert George REEVES and Martha ARNOLD were married at Motcombe. See Research Note 1 below.

The birth registrations of James, Jabez, Jonathan and Jeremiah all appear in the Shaftesbury (Dorset) Registration District, which includes the parish of Motcombe. The birth registrations of Frederick and Albert George occurred in the Abergavenny (Monmouthshire) Registration District. In all instances their mother's maiden name is shown as ARNOLD.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Albert appears in his father's household, in Motcombe. He is named as simply George. Martha plus their three eldest children Mary Ann, James and Jabez also appear in the same household.

At the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Albert George Reeves and his family are at Augusta Street, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire. He gave his age as 36 (so born c1815) and claimed birth at Motcombe, Dorset. He is working as a Coal Coaker (sic Coker). In addition to his wife Martha, the household comprises their children Mary Ann (15), Jaben(z)(10), James (13), Jeremiah (5), Jonathan (8) and Albert George (9 months).

Neither Albert nor any of his family have yet been identified on the 1861 census.

On the 1871 census, George and Martha REEVES appear on Wains Row, Manmoel, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire. He is now 56 and still employed as a Coker. They are living in the same dwelling as their widowed daughter Mary Ann RICHARDS and her six children and were enumerated as the second household.

Albert has yet to be identified on the 1881 census. His wife Martha was a patient at the Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum, Abergavenny and her martial status is noted as being "Married", suggesting Albert might be living at this date.

It is probable the November entry relates to the initial calling of the Banns, with the marriage in December.

The transcription at FMP notes the witnesses were William EXTANCE and Meshach MOORE. These individuals have not been investigated for a family connection.
