Narrative

Alfred REEVES is the fifth of six known children of John Reeves and his wife Sarah (nee JENNER). FreeBMD notes that Alfred's birth, along with that of his sister Alice was recorded during the fourth quarter of 1861 in the Petworth Registration District. They share the same registration number, strongly suggesting they were twins. Both were baptised on the same day in December 1861 at the Parish Church of St Peter Ad Vincula at Wisborough Green, Sussex. Alfred's baptism has a reference number one lower than Alice's.

On the 1871 census Alfred appears in his widowed father's home at Lock House, Wisborough Green, Sussex. His mother Sarah had died the previous summer. Alfred is now 9 years old and his birth place is given as Wisborough Green, Sussex. He is a Scholar. His elder sister Ann (who is 16) is acting as House Keeper for the family which in addition to his father John includes his elder brother George (22) and his sister Alice (9).

At the time of the 1881 census Alfred is not found in his father's household and he has yet to be positively identified elsewhere on this census.

The marriage of Alfred REEVES to Mary ETHERTON took place during October 1887 at the Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Rudgwick, Sussex. FreeBMD notes the even occurred during the fourth quarter and was recorded in the Horsham Registration District.
The known children of Alfred REEVES and his wife Mary (nee Etherton) are
  1. Ellen Mary Reeves, b.reg 1q1889 Cuckfield Reg.Dist.
  2. Arthur John Reeves, b.reg. 1q1890 Horsham Reg.Dist.
On the 1891 census Alfred is head of household at Cyder Mill, Warnham, Sussex. His age is noted as 29 and his place of birth is Wisborough Green, Sussex. He is working as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to his wife Mary, their two children complete the household.

Neither Alfred nor his wife Mary have been identified on the 1901 census. Their son Arthur appears as a boarder in the household of George and Mary LUFF. Their daughter Ellen appears in the household of Eli & Emma ETHERTON, where her relationship is given as Niece.

It is strongly suspected that Alfred's death is that noted by FreeBMD occurring during the fourth quarter of 1898 in the Horsham Registration District. The age at death was 37, which matches this individual.
