Artemus was a wagoner in Co. K, 79th Illinois Volunteers from Douglas County, Illinois. He enrolled 31 Jul 1862, and was mustered as a wagoner 28 Aug 1862. He died on the road 21 Oct 1863. "Late Capt. certifies that said soldier fell dead from his horse while on the way from Stennson Ala to Chattanooga Tenn. Oct 21 1863. Civil surgern testifies that he was Artemus P. Reeves family physician for eight years and knew him to be a sound man when he entered the service." The pension record includes the list of children with there birthdays of the year 1864 along with their ages at that time.
Artemus is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Research Notes
Artemus is incorrectly listed as Abraham on the 1860 census. That this is him is proved by the fact that daughter Harriet is listed in the household and her death certificate names her parents as Artemus Reeves and Sarah Beedle, which match the marriage record for them. In addition, his mother, Lucy Reeves, is listed next door to them.Sources
