Narrative

Various websites misidentify Beriah B. Reeves as a son of Fortune and Malachi Reeves, the son of James Reeves of Guilford County NC, while others name Elizabeth and Malachi Reeves, son of William Reeves who died in Granville County NC in 1751. However, the family Bible of Malachi Reeves (1771-1827) lists Beriah as his son.

Beriah B. Reeves was Captain of Militia District 168 of Wilkes County, Georgia for the years 1821-1822 and 1825-1828.

Capt. Beriah B. Reeves of Wilkes County received land in Monroe County in the 1821 Georgia land lottery. He sold this land on 19 Jan 1824.

The 1830 census of Wilkes County, Georgia lists Berriah B. Reeves household as 1 Male 30-39, 1 Female 30-39 and 1 Female 60-69 with 2 Slaves.

If Beriah Reeves married prior to his marriage to Rowena Holmes, her identity is unknown. The female aged 30-39 listed in the 1830 census is presumably that first wife and the older female in his household, his mother or mother-in-law although it is possible that the two females were his mother and an unmarried sister. If there was a first wife, she obviously died between 1830 when the census was taken and June of 1832 when he remarried the younger Rowena Holmes, born c1810 who is recorded as his wife in the 1840 census.

In 1832, Beriah Reeves was the Church Clerk at the Sardis Baptist church in Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia. At one time there were 19 Reeves who were members of this church starting in 1788. The last one to join was Beriah B. Reeves in 1831.

On the 4th of May 1836 in Wilkes County, Georgia, B. B. Reeves is a legatee listed as receiving a distributive share of the estate of J. B. Holmes deceased.

In the 1840 census listing for the household of Beriah B. Reeves is 1 Male 40-49, 1 Female 0-5, 1 Female 5-9, 1 Female 20-29 and 4 Slaves.
