After the death of his father, Jesse Britt Reeves, sometime before 1859, Charles Reeves is found in the 1860 census living in Scott County, Missouri in the household of his mother, Louisa who had remarried Joseph Lanham.

By the 1870 census, Charles and his sister Susan are living in the household of their mother, Louisa Lanham who is again widowed, in Fox River Precinct of White County, Illinois.
