Narrative

NB As noted elsewhere, Charles's father, William, seems to have a particularly fluid surname which is variously recorded as Rives, Rivers and Reeves.

Charles was baptised on 2 May 1802 at the Parish Church of St Mary, South Stoneham in Hampshire when his family names was recorded as RIVES.

As Charles Reivs (sic), he married Elizabeth AXTELL also at the Parish Church of St Mary, South Stoneham in Hampshire on 24 June 1822. All subsequent references to Charles use the surname REEVES (except the Jan 1825 baptism of his daughter Jane).

Known children of Charles Reeves and Elizabeth (nee Axtell) are ...
  1. Sarah Reeves, born c1825 bapt May 1823
  2. Jane Reeves, born c1826 bapt Jan 1825 (as Jane RIVES)
  3. Elizabeth Reeves, born c1829 bapt Mar 1828
  4. Eleanor/Ellenor Reeves, bapt 11 April 1830
  5. Susanah Reeves, born c1833 bapt Aug 1832
  6. Mary Ann Reeves, bapt Mar 1835, bur Apr 1836, age 1
  7. Eliza Reeves, bapt 15 January 1837
  8. Martha Reeves, b.reg. 1q1839, d.reg 1q1839, bur Mar 1839, age 0

  10. Fanny Reeves, b.reg. 3q1840, bapt Aug 1840 at West End
  11. Harriet(t) Reeves, born c1843 b.reg. 2q1842, bapt Oct 1842 at West End
All the baptisms above occurred at the Parish Church of St Mary, South Stoneham unless otherwise noted and the birth & death registrations were in South Stoneham Registration District.

On the 1841 census, Charles and Elizabeth Reeves together with seven children are living in the Alms Houses in the southern part of the Tything of Shamblehurst in the parish of South Stoneham. The youngest child, Fanny is just 10 months old at this time. Charles is described as being a Sawyer.

By the time of the 1851 census, Charles with his wife Elizabeth are living at West End and with four of their daughters and their grandson William C Reeves. Charles gives his age as 49 and claims birth in South Stoneham. He is working as an Agricultural Labourer

A decade later and the 1861 census notes Charles as being 59 years old. Unfortunately the film of the enumeration page shows the bottom right corner has been torn away and his place of birth is no longer available. His occupation is Market G....., presumably Gardener, per the 1871 census. He is living with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Harriett at Gravel Pit Hill, still in Shamblehurst Tything.

At the time of the 1871 census, Charles is described as a Market Gardener, aged 69 and he again claims birth in South Stoneham. He is living with his wife Elizabeth on Gravel Pit Lane and a lodger William Harding completes the household.

Neither Charles nor his wife Elizabeth have, as yet been found on the 1881 census. It is probable Charles's is the death registered in the June quarter of 1871 in South Stoneham Registration District, age 69.

Research Notes

(1) The birth registrations of daughters Martha and Mary during 1q1839 show their mother's maiden name as AXTELL .
The birth registration of daughter Fanny during 3q1840 records her mother's maiden name as AXTLE (sic).
The birth registration of daughter Harriett during 2q1842 also records her mother's maiden name as AXTLE (sic).
