Narrative

Charles Reeves is the fifth of twelve known children of Asher REEVES and his wife Jane (nee AYRES). It is likely his is the birth noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the third quarter of 1864 in the Wokingham Registration District which included Hurst (aka Hurst St Nicholas) and Wokingham civil parishes in Berkshire.

On the 1871 census, Asher Charles appears with his parents in the family home at Sindlesham, Winnersh, Berkshire. He is noted as being 6 years old and that he was born in Sindlesham. He is the fifth of eight children in the household at that time.

At the time of the 1881 census, Asher Charles again appears in his parent's household at Sindlesham. He is now recorded as being 16 years old and his place of birth (like many of his siblings) is noted as Bearwood, Berkshire. (See Research Note 1 below.) He was the second eldest of nine children in the household and like his elder brother William was working as an Agricultural Labourer.

FreeBMD notes that Charles REEVES married Caroline Matilda WILDER during the second quarter of 1889 within the Wokingham Registration District.
The known children of Charles Reeves and his wife Caroline Matilda (nee WILDER) are
  1. Emily Louisa Reeves, b.reg. 1889
  2. Matilda Ellen Reeves, b.reg. 1891
  3. Celia Elizabeth Reeves, b.reg. 1893
  4. Alfred George Reeves, b.reg. 1895
  5. Rose Caroline Reeves, b.reg. 1897
  6. Ernest John Reeves, b.reg. 1899
  7. William Charles Reeves, b.reg. 1901
  8. Herbert Octavious A Reeves, b.reg. 1903
  9. Mary Alice Reeves, b.reg. 1905
  10. Harry Reeves, b.reg. 1907
  11. Bertha Laura Reeves, b.reg. 1910
All of the above births were registered in the Easthampstead Registration District except Matilda's who was registered in Wokingham Registration District.

On the 1891 census Charles and Caroline Reeves are living on Cheesemans Lane in the village of King Street in the civil parish of Winnersh, Berkshire. Charles claims he is 26 years old and was born in Sindlesham, Berkshire. He is working as an Agricultural Labourer. Their daughter Emily L Reeves, who is just 1 year old, completes the household.

By the time of the 1901 census Charles and Caroline are living at Newell Green in Warfield, Berkshire. He is now 35 years old and claims birth in Hurst, Berkshire. His occupation is recorded as Labourer in Brick Works. Their eldest seven children, with William the youngest at just 3 months, complete the household.

On the 1911 census Charles and Caroline are living at West End, Warfield. Charles indicates he is 46 years old and that he was born at Hurst, Berkshire. He and Caroline have been married for 22 years and Caroline has had eleven children in that time, all of whom are still then surviving. He gave his occupation as Labourer and in a second hand "Corn Merchants Carter" has been added. Charles named all eleven of his children and then crossed out the three eldest (all daughters), leaving Alfred (aged 16) as the eldest child living at home. Two of the elder daughters have already been identified on the same census as working in service elsewhere.

Charles and Caroline's eldest son Alfred was killed in France whilst serving with the Royal Berkshire Regiment during WW1. Both Charles and Caroline are named as Alfred's beneficiaries in the "UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929". Charles received the first distribution in December 1916 and Caroline the second in September 1919.

It is probable that Charles's death is that noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the second quarter of 1929 in the Reading Registration District, when his age was given as 63.

Research Notes

(1) Bear Wood (aka Bearwood) was an ecclesiastical parish created from Hurst and Wokingham ecclesiastical parishes in 1846. Sindlesham is within Bear Wood. http://maps.familysearch.org/
