Narrative

Charles REEVES is the first of seven known children of Joseph REEVES and his wife Margaret (nee COOKE). He was baptised at the end of January 1813 at the Parish Church of St James in Ludgershall, where his parent's had married the previous October. In the baptismal register his parents are referred to as "Joseph and Margaret Reeves the younger" to differentiate them from his paternal grand-parents who were coincidently Joseph and Margaret Reeves.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Charles is enumerated separately but appears in the house of John and Martha FIELDS. His age is given as 27 and he was born in county (that is Wiltshire). He is working as an Agricultural Labourer.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charles appears as one of two lodgers in the household of John and Ann BAKER. His age is recored as 34 (sic, 37 expected), he is unmarried and his place of birth was Ludgershall, Wiltshire. He is working as a Labourer.

Charles has not been identified on the 1861 census or any subsequent census.

It is highly probable Charles's death is that recorded in the GRO Index during 2q1853 in the Andover Registration District. He was 40 years old. There is a corresponding burial entry in the register of St James's during April 1853, where his age is again noted as 40.

Research Notes

(1)   It is most probable that Charles died single. He is described as unmarried (rather than a widower) on the 1851 census. FreeBMD has no marriage entry for a Charles Reev* in the Andover Registration District between 3q1837 and 2q1853, although it is just possible he married elsewhere or before Civil Registration began on 1 July 1837.
