On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Joseph is living on Castle Street, Ludgershall, Wiltshire. His age is given as 49, he was born in county (Wiltshire) and he works as a Bricklayer. The household comprises his wife Margarett (sic) age 45, Joseph Reeves age 19, (Reeves_Tom_7194|Tom Reeves)) age 10, and Margarett (sic) Reeves age 13. Sharing the same dwelling but enumerated separately are Charles CROUCH, Elizabeth CROUCH (nee REEVES, Joseph and Margaret's daughter) and their young son James, whose full name is James Reeves CROUCH.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Joseph and Margaret are still living in Ludgershall. He is now 59 years old, a widower and described as a Labourer. Their sons Joseph and Tom remain in the family home.
Joseph's wife Margaret died during March 1855 and she was buried at Ludgershall on 24 March.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows Joseph as a Lodger in the household of William and Amelia Mathews. See Research Note 2 below. Joseph's age is given as 70, his place of birth as Ludgershall and his occupation as Bricklayer.
On the 1871 census, Joseph appears as the Father in Law in the household of Charles Crouch and his wife Elizabeth (nee Reeves). This a reversal of roles from the 1841 census where the recently married couple Charles and Elizabeth were living with her parents, Joseph and Margaret. Joseph is now an 80 year old widower, who claims birth in Ludgershall. He was formerly a Bricklayer.
Joseph has not been identified on the 1881 census.
FreeBMD notes a death during the fourth quarter of 1878 in the Andover Registration District of a Joseph Reeves, age 87. FamilySearch notes the burial of Joseph Reeves at the Parish Church of St James, Ludgershall on 24 October 1878 and the burial register for Ludgershall Church (from Ancestry) confirms the date and notes his age as 87.
Research Notes
(1) Joesph's wife was Margaret COOKE. Co-incidentally William Reeves, another Ludgershall resident married Hannah COOK in 1820 at the same church. The potential for a relationship between Josepeh and William and also between their wives Margaret and Hannah has yet to be investigated.(2) This is most probably the William Mathews who married Amelia TAYLOR on 1 October 1831 at the Parish Church of St James, Ludgershall. There is presently no known family connection. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXSX-TZD
