Narrative

Edward REEVES is the second of seven known children of Joseph REEVES and his wife Margaret (nee COOKE). He was baptised in August 1815 at the Parish Church of St James in Ludgershall. In the baptismal register his parents are referred to as "Joseph and Margaret Reeves the younger" to differentiate them from his paternal grand-parents who were coincidently Joseph and Margaret Reeves.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Edward does NOT appears in his parent's home on Castle Street, Ludgershall and he has yet to be identified elsewhere.

Edward REEVES married Susanna CROUCH during September 1842 at the Parish Church of St James in Ludgershall. The Marriage Register shows he was 25 years old and that he was a Bricklayer. It names his father as Joseph REEVES, also a Bricklayer.
The known children of Edward REEVES and his wife Susanna (nee CROUCH) are
  1. Charles Reeves, bapt Oct 1844
  2. Ann Reeves, bapt Nov 1846
See also Research Note 1 below.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Edwars's wife Susan (sic) REEVES appears as a widow in the household of her father William CROUCH, along with three children Jane Reeves (age 10, again see Research Note 1), Charles Reeves (age 9) and Ann Reeves (age 8)

It is highly probable Edward's death is that recorded in the GRO Index during 2q1846 in the Andover Registration District. He was 30 years old. There is a corresponding burial entry in the register of St James's during June 1846, where his age is again noted as 30.

Research Notes

(1)   The GRO Index of Births has an entry for Jane CROUCH during 4q1840 in the Andover Registration District. Her mother's maiden name is recorded as "-", indicative of an unmarried mother. There is a corresponding baptismal entry in the Ludgershall Parish Register in January 1841, when Jane the base born daughter of Susan CROUCH was baptised. On the same day William Thomas CROUCH the son of Joseph and Mary CROUCH as also baptised.

(2)   Susanna CROUCH is almost certainly the younger sister of Charles CROUCH, the husband of Elizabeth REEVES, who was Edward's younger sister.
  • Susanna CROUCH was baptised in October 1821 at Ludgershall, the daughter of William Crouch, a blacksmith, and his wife Frances.
  • Charles CROUCH was baptised in April 1815 in the adjacent parish of Chute, the son of William Crouch, a blacksmith, and his wife Frances.
(3)   Susan Reeves subsequently had another daughter Emma Reeves (bapt June 1856, Ludgershall). She later married William LANSLEY in May 1860 at Ludgershall and the 1861 census show they had a daughter Elizabeth Lansley.
