Narrative
Charles is the eldest known child of Edward REEVES and his wife Susannah (nee CROUCH). His birth was registered during the third quarter of 1844 in the Andover Registration District, when his mother's maiden name was given as CROUCH. He was baptised in October 1844 at the Parish Church of St James, Ludgershall, Wiltshire.Charles was under two years of age when his father Edward died in June 1846.
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charles appears in the household of William CROUCH (his maternal grand father) along with his mother, but his relationship to the head of household is stated as son, rather than grandson. He is 9 years old and his place of birth is given as Ludgershall, Wiltshire.
In May 1860, Charles's mother Susan married William Lansley and on the 1861 census shows that Charles Reeves appears in the household of William and Susan LANSLEY in Ludgershall. He is described as William's son in law (aka step-son), he is 16 years old and working as an Under Carter.
