Narrative
William REEVES is the fifth of seven known children of Joseph REEVES and his wife Margaret (nee COOKE). He was baptised in April 1824 at the Parish Church of St James in Ludgershall. In the baptismal register, his father's calling is noted as Mason. On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, William does NOT appears in his parent's home on Castle Street, Ludgershall and he has yet to be identified elsewhere.
William REEVES and Ann GREEN were married in July 1848 at the Parish Church of St Mary in Andover, Hampshire, when Joseph Reeves was recorded as Father of the Groom. On subsequent census returns, Ann Reeves (nee Green) gives her place of birth as Andover, so it would seem William and Ann were married in her home parish.
The known children of William Reeves and his wife Ann (nee GREEN) are
- Henry Reeves, b.reg. 3q1848
- Fanny Reeves, bapt. April 1852
A decade later and the 1861 census shows William's wife Ann as a Widow. Ann is head of a household comprising her two children Henry (12) and Fanny (9) plus her nephew John CROUCH (11). (See Research Note 2 below.)
It is likely William's death is that recorded in the GRO Index during 1q1853 in the Andover Registration District. He was 28 years old. There is a corresponding burial entry in the register of St James's during March 1853, where his age is again noted as 28.
Research Notes
(1) The baptism of Joseph and Margaret's first four children specifically records them as "Joseph and Margaret Reeves the younger" to differentiate them from William's paternal grand-parents who were coincidently Joseph and Margaret Reeves.(2) John CROUCH is most probably the son of Charles CROUCH and his wife Elizabeth (nee REEVES). Elizabeth REEVES is our subject's older sister; the third known child of Joseph REEVES and his wife Margaret (nee COOKE).
