Narrative

Charlotte Reeves, the daughter of William Reeves and his wife Hannah (nee Morris) was baptised at the Parish Church of All Saints, Newchurch on the Isle of Wight in November 1831.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Charlotte appears in a family content with her parents William & Hannah and six siblings at Marsley (sic Mersley) in the parish of Newchurch, Isle of Wight. She is shown as being 9 years old and born within the county of Hampshire.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charlotte is employed as a Nurse in the household of Samuel & Amelia CLAYTON, living at Eastfield, Upper Dover Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. She is 19 years old and claims birth in Newchurch, Hampshire.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Charlotte at 40 Union Street, Ryde where she is a house servant in the household of William Dashwood, a grocer. She is 29 years old, single and again claiming birth at Newchurch, Hampshire. The handwriting in the enumeration schedule is particularly poor and Charlotte's surname might be read as Neeves rather than Reeves, but there is little doubt this is the same individual.

Charlotte has not been identified on subsequent census returns.

The Isle of Wight Family History Society's marriage index notes the marriage of a Charlotte Reeves to Benjamin HOBBS in 1865 at the Parish Church of St Catherine, Ventnor, Isle of Wight and FreeBMD narrows the time period to the second quarter on 1865. The IoW FHS further notes the arrival of three Hobbs children with "other surname" of Reeves in 1866, 1869 & 1871

However, based on subsequent census returns showing Benjamin's wife as having been born in Sherborne Dorset, it is concluded this is not the same individual.

It is therefore highly probable that this Charlotte's death is that recorded in the March quarter of 1863. The IoW FHS index notes her age as 31 and the death being registered in the Ryde sub district. Do you have a copy of her death certificate which might help confirm her identity?
