Narrative
Daniel's early life has yet to be researched. The 1851 & 1861 census returns point to his birth around 1807 in Exeter, Devon. There is some fluidity in the spelling of his surname; perhaps in part explained by how a Devonian accent was understood in Hampshire.
Daniel REEVES married Eliza HUTCHINGS at the Parish Church of All Saints, Southampton, Hampshire in October 1831,
The known children of Daniel Reeve(s) and Eliza (nee Hutchings) are ...
- Louisa Reeves, bapt. Sept 1832
- Emma Reeves, bapt. Apr 1834
- Ann Reeve, b.reg. 1q 1840
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Daniel and Eliza REEVES are living on Middle Street in the St Mary district of Southampton. Daniel's age is noted as being 30 and that he was not born within the county (of Hampshire). He is working as a Tin Plate Worker. Eliza is also 30 years old but she was born in Hampshire, as were the three children. Louisa (9), Emma (7) and Ann (1). There are five other people sharing the same dwelling, including William REEVES, age 20, a Plumber, who was also not born in the county (of Hampshire).
At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Daniel and family are enumerated under the surname REEVE. They are living at 10 Middle Street. St Mary parish, Southampton. Daniel is shown as being 44 years old and he claims birth in Exeter, Devon. He is again recorded as a Tin Plate Worker. His wife Eliza is 45 and was born in Gosport, Hampshire. Their daughter Louisa is 18 and was born in Southampton and daughter Ann is 11 and also born in Southampton. Mary PRIOR, age 70, who was born at Widecombe in Devon completes the household. Mary is a widow and her relationship is given as "Inmate" and her occupation as Nurse. See Research Note 1 below.
A decade later and the 1861 census shows Daniel and Eliza REEVE (sic) are still living at 10 Middle Street in the St Mary district of Southampton. Daniel is now noted as being 55 years old, but other details remain consistent. Eliza is now 56 and their daughter Louisa is 28 and unmarried with no occupation shown. Completing the household is their grand daughter Harriett REEVES, age 8 who was born in Southampton. See Research Note 2 below.
Daniel has not been identified on the 1871 or any subsequent census return in England & Wales. It is possible his is the death recorded as Daniel REEVES in the GRO Index during the fourth quarter of 1868 in the Southampton Registration District. This individual was age 63 at death, so born around 1805.
Research Notes
(1) On the 1851 census sharing the same dwelling at 10 Middle Street but enumerated on a separate schedule are Thomas ADAMS (26, born Dublin, a Seaman) and his wife Mary A ADAMS (age 22 and born Stoke, Devon). It is not presently known if Mary Prior and/or Mary Adams are in some way related to Daniel or if it was purely co-incidental that all three originate from Devon.(2) Baptism records indicate that the grand daughter Harriet Reeve(s) shown on the 1861 census is the child of their daughter Emma.
