Narrative

Emma is the second of three known children born to Daniel Reeve(s) and his wife Eliza (nee HUTCHINGS). She was baptised in April 1834 at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton in Hampshire.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Emma appears in her parents household living on Middle Street in the St Mary district of Southampton. She is described as being 7 years old and was born in county (Hampshire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Emma is not with her parents, who remain on Middle Street. She is living with James Gullicker and his wife Harriett (nee ) at 23 Union Street, Southampton. See 18510330_Census_Soton_St_Mary_Reeves_Emma_8790. Emma is 17 years old, was born in Southampton and is working as a House Servant.

Known child of Emma REEVES
  1. Harriet Gullicker REEVES or GULLICKER, married Nicholas SQUIRES.
During the fourth quarter of 1852, Emma gave birth to a daughter, Harriet. FreeBMD has two entries with the same volume and page references showing Harriet's name as both Harriet Gullicker REEVES and also as Harriet Gullicker GULLICKER. The GRO Index shows only the latter entry with the mother's maiden name recorded as "——", indicative of an unmarried mother. Daughter Harriet was baptised in June 1854 (sic) at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton and her father is named as James GULLICKER.

On the 1861 census, whilst her daughter Harriet Reeves is to be found with Emma's parents Daniel and Eliza, Emma is not with them. It is suspected she is the individual who appears as Emma RIEVE (sic) working as a Cook in the household of Martha CORTIS (age 78, born Woolwich, Kent) and her daughter Rebecca CORTIS (age 44, also born Woolwich, Kent). They are living in Carlton House on Carlton Place in the All Saints district of Southampton. Emma is 27 years and was born in Southampton, so a good match for our subject.

As Emma REEVE she married Henry HOLDER at the Parish Church of Holy Trinity in Southampton in January 1862.
The known child of Emma Holder (nee REEVE(s)) and Henry HOLDER is
  1. Louisa Ann HOLDER, b.reg. 1q1866 in Southampton Reg.Dist. with mmn of REEVES, married Frederick Charles HOUSE

By the time of the 1871 census, Emma Holder is described as a widow and it is probable that her husband Henry's death is that recorded during the fourth quarter of 1865 in the Southampton Registration District. He was aged 35, so born around 1830,

On the 1871 census, Emma is living at 14 Middle Street in the St Mary district of Southampton. She is a 34 year old widow, born in Southampton, Hampshire. She is working as a Laundress. Her daughters Harriet GULLICKER (age 18, born Southampton, a Servant) and Louisa Ann HOLDER (5, Southampton, a Scholar) are living with her.

At the time of the 1881 census, Emma Holder is living at 22 Princes Street in the St Mary district of Southampton. She claims now to be just 40 years old, is a widow and was born in Southampton. She continues working as a Laundress. Her daughter Louisa (now 15 and a General Domestic Servant out of employment) lives with her. Although enumerated on a separate schedule, also living in the same house are Nicholas SQUIRES and his wife Harriet (nee GULICKER (sic), Emma's older daughter), plus their 3 month old twin daughters.

Emma has not yet been identified on the 1891 census or subsequent census returns. No strongly matching death registration has been identified for Emma Holder either. It is of course possible she remarried or will be found cohabiting and appears under another surname. See Research Note 1 below.
