On 23 February 1898 he received his first commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the West India Regiment, transferring from the Militia.

On 16 November 1898 he was appointed Lieutenant in the West India Regiment.

On 05 May 1900 he transferred to the 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards, retaining his rank of Lieutenant.

On 5 March 1904 he transferred to the 7th (Princess Royal's) Dragoon Guards and was promoted to Captain, the rank he is shown as still holding in June 1906.

While some army lists apparently state he was born 2 Apr 1875, others state 25 Apri 1875. His birth with 25 Apr 1875 is recorded in Ireland birth records.
