Narrative

Edward William REEVES is the oldest of the five known children (all sons) born to Edward REEVES and his wife Fanny (nee SNUDDEN). The IoW FHS notes his birth was in 1875 and was recorded in the Godshill Registration sub District. The GRO Index to the Registration of Births has an entry for John during the 1q1875 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. Both entries record his mother's maiden name as Snudden.

At the time of the 1881 census, Edward W Reeves appears in his parent's household at 14 Market Street, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. He is 6 years old, was born at Ventnor and his occupation is given as Scholar. He has three younger brothers at this time.

On the 1891 census, he is listed as William Reeves in his parent's household, now at 15 Surrey Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. He is now 16 years of age, his birth place is again given as Ventnor and he is working as a Groom.

By the time of the 1901 census William Reeves appears as head of household at 8 Brunswick Street in Ryde. His age and place of birth remain consistent. He is working as a Coachman for a Cab Proprietor. The census enumeration notes he is married and that his wife is Florence Reeves, who is 24 years old and was born in Bristol. However, no likely marriage registration (in England & Wales) matching this couple has yet been identified. There are no other members of this household.

On the 1911 census Edward William Reeves appears as head of household at 12 Belmont Street, Southsea, Hampshire. He is now 35 years old, still claims birth in Ventnor, Isle of Wight and is employed as a Labourer at the Water Works. His wife Florence, is now 31 years old and again claims birth in Bristol. They now claim they have been married for six years (even though they appeared as a husband and wife a decade earlier) and have had no children. The third member of the household is a Jack Reeves who is relationship is described as Brother in Law. Based on Jack's age and place of birth, it is strongly suspected this is actually Edward's youngest brother John Reeves. A boarder, William Lime, completes the household.

Edward and Florence Reeves have not been identified together on the 1939 census. It is strongly suspected that Edward's death is that recorded during the first quarter of 1932 in the Isle of Wight Registration District as Edward William Reeves, age 55. See Research Note 1 below.

Research Notes

(1) Whilst Edward has not been identified on the 1939 census, it is believed Florence has been, as Mrs Albert TOOGOOD.
FreeBMD notes the marriage of a Florence REEVES and Albert Edward TOOGOOD during 4q1933 in the Southampton Registration District. On the 1939 Register, Albert & Florence TOOGOOD are living at 49 Macnaghton Road, Southampton along with Edward's youngest brother John Reeves.
