Narrative

John REEVES is the youngest of the five known children (all sons) born to Edward REEVES and his wife Fanny (nee SNUDDEN). He was born on 12 June 1882 at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. The IoW FHS notes his birth was in 1882 and was recorded in the Godshill Registration sub District. The GRO Index to the Registration of Births has an entry for John during the 3q1882 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. Both entries record his mother's maiden name as Snudden.

On the 1891 census, John appears in his parent's household at 15 Surrey Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. He is 8 years of age, his birth place is given as Ventnor and he is occupation is given as a Scholar.

It is likely that John's mother Fanny died during 3q1896, when he was 14 years old. See Research Note 1 below.

John has yet to be positively identified on the 1901 Census. He is not with his father and brothers, nor with his oldest brother Edward.

John has also yet to be positively identified on the 1911 census, but it is highly probable he is the individual who appears in his brother Edward's household at 12 Belmont Street, Southsea. Jack (sic) Reeves is described as Edward's Brother in Law rather than simply as his Brother. This individual is 29 years old and born Ventnor, Isle of Wight, making him a good match for John. His occupation is noted as Merchant Seaman, which might also explain his absence from the 1900 census.

John has been identified on the 1939 Register, living in the household of Albert TOOGOOD at 49 Macnaghton Street, Southampton. The Register provides his date of birth and notes that he is single. It also records he is employed in "heavy work" as a Ship Year Rigger. See Research Note 2 below.

It is possible that John's death is that noted by FreeBMD during the fourth quarter of 1960 in the New Forest Registration District. This John was 78 years old, a good match with our subject, but the New Forest Registration District, although close by, does raise a cautionary flag. Do you have a copy of this death certificate you could share with us, please?

Research Notes

(1) details to follow

(2) At the time of the 1939 Register, John was living in the household of Albert and Florence TOOGOOD at 49 Macnaghton Street, Southampton. It is strongly suspected that Albert and Florence's marriage is that noted by FreeBMD during the fourth quarter of 1933 in Southampton Registration District. Florence is named as Florence REEVES and its is further suspected that she was the widow of John's oldest brother Edward whose death was recorded during 1q1932.
