On the 1841 census Elizabeth is found in a family group with her parents and siblings.

On the 1851 census she is employed as a House Servant in the household of William Gay and his wife Sarah nee Shelley at Blinmans Farm at Bramshaw in Wiltshire. The precise relationship between Sarah Gay (nee Shelley) and Elizabeth's mother Eliza Reeves (nee Shelley) is not currently known. It is possible they were sisters, but there is more than one Sarah Shelley baptised in Downton around the same time.
