Narrative

Frances Reeves, the daughter of William Reeves and his wife Hannah/Hanah (nee Morris) was baptised at the Parish Church of All Saints, Newchurch on the Isle of Wight in early January 1834.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Frances appears in a family content with her parents William & Hannah and six siblings at Marsley (sic Mersley) in the parish of Newchurch, Isle of Wight. She is shown as being 7 years old and born within the county of Hampshire.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Frances is recorded as a servant in the household of John and Ann SAUNDERS, living at 2 George Street, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. She is 17 years old and claims birth in Newchurch, Hampshire.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Frances as the Housekeeper in her unmarried brother William's household, both their parents having died in 1859. Two other siblings complete the household. She is now aged 27 years and remains consistent that Newchurch was her place of birth.

Frances married Isaac TAYLOR at the Zion Chapel, Newport, Isle of Wight in 1863.

Known children of Isaac Taylor and Frances (nee Reeves) are
  1. Mary Ann Taylor, born 1864, in 1892 marries Alfred JOLLIFFE
  2. Emily Kate Taylor, born 1866
  3. Charles Taylor, born 1869, died 1869 aged 3 months
  4. Susy/Susan Eleanor Taylor, born 1871, died 1872 aged 6 months
  5. George William Taylor, born 1874, died 1952

On the 1871 census, Frances appears as the wife of Isaac Taylor along with daughters Mary A and Kate at Bordwood (now Borthwood) in the ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church, Sandown, IoW. She admits to being only 34 years old, where as 37 years might be expected yet her place of birth remains Newchurch.

Husband Isaac dies aged 37 in 1876. Frances has yet to be identified on any subsequent census return and it is probable hers is the death recorded in 1875 age 39 years (so birth around 1835-1836) in the Ryde Registration Sub-District. Do you have a copy of this death certificate which might confirm this speculation?
