Narrative

Frederick William Reeves is the second of the six known children born to Richard REEVES and his wife Ann Elizabeth (nee RICHARDS). He was baptised in early March 1861 at the Parish Church of St Thomas, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

At the time of the 1861 census, Frederick appears with his parents on Castle Street, Ryde. He is just 2 months old and was born at Ryde.

Frederick's father Richard died and was buried in late July 1865, when Frederick would have been just four years old. His mother remarried in early 1869 to become Mrs Daniel BUTCHERS, but Frederick seems not to have adopted his step-father's surname.

On the 1871 census, Frederick REEVES is named as the son of Daniel BUTCHERS and his wife Ann Elizabeth BUTCHERS. They are living at Beech Cottage, Ryde. Frederick is now 9 years old, a Scholar and again his place of birth is shown as Ryde, Isle of Wight.

At the time of the 1881 census, Frederick appears in the household of his Uncle Charles REEVES and his Aunt Elizabeth who are living at the Back of Sea View, Dover Street, Ryde. His relationship is given as cousin rather than nephew. Frederick is now 20 years old, is working as a Labourer and again claims Ryde as his place of birth.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Frederick William REEVES and Rose COLE during the third quarter of 1866 in the Pancras Registration District of London.
The known children of Frederick William REEVES and his wife Rose (nee COLE) are
  1. Winifred Amelia Mary Reeves, b.reg. 3q1887
  2. Charles William Reeves, b.reg. 3q1888
  3. Annie Elizabeth Reeves, b.reg. 4q1889
  4. Douglas Stuart Reeves, b.reg. 3q1893
  5. Frederick John Richard Reeves, b.reg. 4q1895
  6. Rose Violet Reeves, b.reg. 2q1902
  7. Frances Hester Reeves, b.reg. 3q1904
  8. Albert Edward Reeves, b.reg. 2q1906, d.reg. 1q1909
The birth of each child is recorded in the West Ham Registration District and on each occasion their mother's maiden name is noted as Cole

On the 1891 census, Frederick and Rose Reeves are living at Numa Terrace, Roman Road, East Ham, Essex. Frederick is 30 years old and claims birth in Ryde, Isle of Wight. His occupation is not distinctly written. In addition to his wife Rose (age 28 and who was born Temple, Bristol), their three oldest children complete the household. Winifred was born at Plaistow, Charles at North Woolwich and Annie at Roman Road (their current home).

By the time of the 1901 census Frederick and Rose are living at Mountfield Road, East Ham, Essex. His age and place of birth remain consistent and he is working as a Labourer at the Gas Works. Their five oldest children complete the household.

On the 1911 census Frederick and Rose Reeves are living at Alexandra Terrace, Gooseley Lane, East Ham. He is now 50 years old, again claims birth at Ryde, Isle of Wight and is employed as a Labourer at Beckton Gas Works. Rose indicates they have been married for 24 years and that she has had eight children during their marriage, seven of whom are still living and that one child has died. Their children Winifred (23, single), Charles (22, single), Douglas (17), Frederick (15), Violet (9), and Frances (6) are living with them at this time, along with their grandson Stanley (1).

When Frederick's son Charles married in February 1915, he indicated that his father was deceased. It is most likely that Frederick's death is that noted in the GRO Index during the fourth quarter of 1914 in the West Ham Registration District. He was 53 years old.
