Narrative
Richard Reeves is the fourth of the eight known children born to Thomas REEVES and his wife Jane (nee COOPER). His baptism is recorded in the register of the Parish Church of All Saints, Newchurch on the Isle of Wight in August 1840 and also in the register of the Chapel of Ease of St Thomas at Ryde, making it more probable he was actually baptised at the Chapel of Ease of St Thomas at Ryde.On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Richard appears in his parent's household on Dores Row in Ryde, Isle of Wight. They are all enumerated with the surname REAVES. Richard is 10 months old and was born in county, which at this time would have been Hampshire.
At the time of the 1851 census on 30 March, Richard again appears in his parent's household at Dores Row, Ryde. Again all the family are enumerated with the surname REAVES. He is now 10 years old, was born at Ryde, IoW and he is described as a Scholar.
The marriage of Richard REEVES and Ann Elizabeth RICHARDS is recorded in the register of the Parish Church of All Saints, Newchurch. FreeBMD notes the marriage was registered during the fourth quarter 1859 in the Isle of Wight Registration District.
The known children of Richard Reeves and his wife Ann Elizabeth (nee RICHARDS) are
- Caroline Jane Reeves, b.reg 1q1860, d.reg. 1q1860, age 6 weeks
- Frederick William Reeves, b.reg 1q1861
- George Reeves, b.reg. 4q1862, d.reg 1862, age 12 hours
- Richard Thomas Reeves, b.reg. 4q1863, d.reg. 1q1864, age 2 months
- Edward Reeves, b.reg. 4q1864, d.reg. 1q1865, age 2 months
- unnamed female REEVES, b.reg. 1q1866 - See Research Note 2 below.
On the 1861 census, Richard and Ann Reeves are living on Castle Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He is 20 years old, claims birth in Ryde and is working as a labourer. Ann is 19 years old and claims birth in Gosport, Hampshire. Their son Frederick is two months old at this time.
Richard Reeves has not been identified on the 1871 census. It is highly probable his is the death recorded in the GRO Index during the third quarter of 1865, age 24, in the Isle of Wight Registration District. The IOW FHS Index to Death Registrations has a corresponding entry in the Ryde Registration sub District. Richard Reeves, (age 25), was buried at the Parish Church of St Thomas, Ryde on 30 July 1865.
Research Notes
(1) Richard's widow Ann REEVES married Daniel BUTCHERS in Portsea during the first quarter of of 1869. They had a daughter Matilida Emily BUTCHERS whose birth and death was registered during the second quarter of 1869 in the Isle of Wight Registration District. The GRO Index shows Matilda's mother's maiden name as RICHARDS.(2) The birth of Richard and Ann's unnamed daughter was registered during the first quarter of 1866. She was not with her mother and surviving brother Frederick at the time of the 1871 census.
However, on the 1881 census a daughter Annie REEVES (age 15, so born c1866, in Ryde, IoW) is living with her mother Ann Butcher and Daniel Butchers.
(3) On both the 1871 and 1881 census returns Ann Butchers (nee Reeves) place of birth is given as Ryde, Isle of Wight. On the other hand Ann Reeves (nee Richards) place of birth on the 1861 census is recorded as Gosport, Hampshire. This apparent discrepancy should be investigated further to confirm they are one and the same individual.
