Narrative

Gabriel Reeves, the son of Gabriel Reeves and Sarah (nee POW) was baptised at the Parish Church of St Andrew, Chew Magna in Somerset on 13 October 1816. He was the eldest of five known children.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Gabriel has not been found in a family context. However, it is highly probable he is the individual who appears as a Private Soldier at the Royal Marines Barracks in Gosport. He is shown as age 25 and NOT born in county (Hampshire). On the 1881 & 1891 census returns he was described as a Pensioner RMA (Royal Marines Artillery).

Gabriel Reeves marries Sarah Jane WOODY in the Lewisham Registration District in the September quarter of 1842. This Registration District includes Charlton which Sarah claims as her place of birth in 1861 and neighbouring Woolwich was also a Royal Marines base.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Gabriel plus his wife Sarah Jane and four eldest sons are living at Thorngate Buildings, Gosport. Gabriel's occupation is given as "Royal Marines". He claims he is 34 years old and was born in Chew Magna, Somerset.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Gabriel plus wife Sarah and their four youngest children are living at 9 Steel Street in Southsea, Portsea, Hampshire. He is now 45 years old and working as a Ginger Beer Maker's Labourer.

Gabriel and Sarah have been identified on 1871 & 1881 census returns.

On the 1891 census, the family surname is recorded as Reeve (sic).

By the time of the 1901 census, Sarah is a widow. FreeBMD has a strongly matching D. Reg. for a Gabriel Reeves who died in the Portsea Registration District in 3q 1893, aged 77.
