Various online sources and Ancestry trees list Benjamin Reeves and Mary Crook of Mason/Fleming Counties of Kentucky as the parents of George Reeves; however, the biography of Benjamin's son Benjamin F. Reeves who died in Rush County, Indiana does not name a child "George" as one of his siblings. The children of Benjamin Reeves and Mary Crook were listed as Elizabeth, Susan, Fanny, Thomas, Benjamin F., John and Reason Reeve.

George who married Alcebeth Hargett is far more likely the son of Benjamin Reeves who named a son George in his 1838 Fleming County will along with Austin who had married Alcebeth's sister Matilda Hargett. The 1830 census of Mason County, Kentucky names Daniel Hargett one household removed from Austin Reeves and George Reeves in the Western Division. This is also the only George Reeves in the Mason/Fleming area who is the right age (born before 1800) to be the George Washington Reeves later of Jefferson County, Illinois.

The last listing in census records of Mason County for George Reeves was the 1840 census and by 1850, he appeared in the census of Bracken County.

Although the transcription does not cite the reference, his will names at least the following: "Sampson Reeves and his wife Anna Reeves, M.A. Reeves, J. S. W. Hargett & Mary E. Hargett, his wife, Seth W. Derickson, Anna Martha Derickson, G. W. Reeves, Polly A. Reeves, his wife, William H. Reeves."
