Narrative

George is most probably the second known child of Robert Reeves and his wife Mary. The registers of the Parish Church of St Andrew, Heddington, Wiltshire indicate George was both born and baptised in May 1803. From census returns he is consistent in claiming he was born at Heddington, Wiltshire although there is some variation in his age, placing his birth between 1801 and 1803.

George's wife Elizabeth consistently claims birth in Hilmarton and it is possible their marriage is that which occurred in January 1829 in the parish of Compton Bassett, which is adjacent to Hilmarton; if so then Elizabeth's maiden name was Chivers.

The known children of George Reeves and Elizabeth (mnu, perhaps nee Chivers) are
  1. William Reeves, bapt. December 1832
  2. Sarah Reeves, bapt. August 1835
  3. Mary Reeves, bapt. January 1838
  4. James Reeves, bapt. January 1844
  5. Fanny Reeves, born 1846
The baptism of each of the four eldest children is noted in the registers of the Parish Church of St Laurence, Hilmarton, Wiltshire. The GRO Index shows the mother's maiden name for Mary, James and Fanny as CHIVERS

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, George, along with Elizabeth and their three eldest known children are living in the village of Hillmarton (sic), Wiltshire. Theirs is the second household enumerated in the same dwelling. The first is headed by Thomas and Hannah RUMMING and no family connection is known. George is working as an Agricultural Labourer and was born in county (Wiltshire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, George and Elizabeth are living in the hamlet of Goatacre in Hilmarton, Wiltshire. He claims he is 50 years old and was born in Heddington, Wiltshire. He is employed as an Agricultural Labourer. In addition to their children William, Mary, James and Fanny, one Peter Draper (aged 65) is lodging with the family.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows George and Elizabeth again living at Goatacre, Hilmarton, Wiltshire, George now claims he is 58 years old, was born in Heddington and is working as an Agricultural Labourer. Their children James and Fanny complete the household.

On the 1871 census, George and Elizabeth are again to be found at Goatacre, George is now 69 years old and still claiming birth at Heddington. He is now described as a Pauper. Although enumerated on a separate schedule, their son James, his wife Clara and their young daughter Elizabeth (11 months) are sharing the same dwelling.

At the time of the 1881 census, George and Elizabeth remain in Goatacre. George is now shown as being 80 years old and born in Headington (sic Heddington). He is again described as a Pauper. Enoch White is shown as a lodger in the Reeves household and their sons William & James are living close by.

On the 1891 census, George's wife Elizabeth appears as a widow. It is highly probable George's death is that noted by FreeBMD as occurring in the Calne Registration District during the second quarter of 1883; the age at death of 82 is consistent with the (incorrect) age shown on the census a couple of years earlier.
