All of the current information known about George comes from records relating to his death during WW1.The entry for George Reeves within Soldiers Died in the Great War indicates his place of birth was Havant, Hampshire.
It is believed that George's death is that recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website as simply G Reeves. He was serving as Private 20823 in the 1st Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment and died in August 1916. He is buried in the Essex Farm Cemetery, just north of Ieper in the West-Vlaanderen province of Belgium. The CWGC website has no additional information for this individual.
The death of Private 20823 of the Hampshire Regiment is included in the GRO Index to War Deaths 1914-1921. Army (other Ranks) page 3013 as George Reeves, year 1916, vol I.57, page 140.
The "UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929" entry for Private 20823 George Reeves shows him serving with the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. It notes simply he was killed in action in Belgium. It lists his sole legatee as his widow Alice Reeves, with entries in November 1916 and again in September 1919.
Research Notes
(1) The name George Reeves is relatively common in this era and the early life of this individual has yet to be determined. FreeBMD has no birth registrations for George Reeves in the period 1870 to 1900 within the Havant Registration District and six in the neighbouring Portsea Registration District.There is a couple George William Reeves and Alice (nee BRICKWOOD) on the 1911 census, and that George claims birth in both Portsmouth (1881 & 1891) and Havant (1901 & 1911). They were married in 1901 in Guildford, Surrey and the approximate date of their marriage is confirmed by the 1911 census return.
There is also a marriage registration noted by FreeBMD in second quarter of 1906 in Portsmouth Registration District between George William REEVES and Alice Maud ABRAHAM. This couple have yet to be identified on the 1911 census.
(2) The name George Reeves is not amongst those commemorated on the Porstmouth City Centre WW1 Memorial. Panel four includes Reeves H. and Reeves R. who served in the Navy and panel nine includes Reeves C.N. and Reeves H.R. who served in the Army. All four of these individuals have been identified for TRP.
