Narrative

George Henry REEVES is the fourth known child and second son of Edward William REEVES and his wife Emily (nee PHILLIPS). He was the first of their children to be born in the Battersea area of south London (geographically Surrey).

On the 1891 census, George is living with his parents and siblings at 85 Hartington Road, Lambeth, He is 10 years old and his occupation is given as "Scholar".

George has yet to be identified on the 1901 census. See Research Note 1 below.

In April 1906 George married his first cousin Annie REEVES at the Parish Church of St Mary in Southampton, Hampshire. His occupation is shown as "Bus Conductor". Their original marriage certificate has an oval stamp dated a week later with the text "R. H. & R. F. A. Record Office * Woolwich *". This suggests George had some affiliation to the Royal Horse & Royal Field Artillery, the detail of which is presently unknown.

George REEVES and his wife Annie (nee REEVES) had three children.
  1. George Henry REEVES , b.reg. 1q1907
  2. Annie Joy Matilda REEVES, b.reg. 1q1913
  3. Dora Caroline REEVES, b.reg. 4q1915
The birth registration of each child notes their mother's maiden name was REEVES.

By the time of the 1911 census, George is head of household at 107 Stewarts Road in Battersea, London. He is 29 years old, born Battersea and working as a Motor Bus Driver. In addition to his wife Annie (age 29, born Southampton Hampshire) and their first born child (aged 4 years), the household includes George's father Edward REEVES (aged 60, a widower working as a Railway Labourer), his brother Walter REEVES (age 25, single, a Baker) and brother Albert REEVES (age 19, single, a Signal Lad).

On the 1921 Census, George H REEVES, along with his wife Annie REEVES are living on Clifton Crescent, Peckham, London SE15 (geographically Surrey). George indicates he is 39 years 5 months old and that he was born in Battersea, London (also geographically Surrey). He was working as a Bus Driver from the Old Kent Road Bus Garage..

Research Notes

(1)   As noted above, George has not be positively identified on the 1901 census. He may be the individual living at 185 St Johns Hill in Battersea, aged 20, born Lambeth and working as a Time Keeper.  (RG13, Piece 0456, Folio 7 reverse, Page 6)  But given the stamp on his marriage certificate it is also possible he was serving in the Army at this time.
