Narrative

Henry was the sixth and last known child of Charles REEVES and his wife Ann (nee RUSSELL), who was baptised in June 1818 at the Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul, Kings Somborne.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Henry has yet to be positively identified.

Henry appears on the 1851 and subsequent census returns married to Sarah. It is probable this is the marriage recorded on FreeBMD in the first quarter of 1842 in the Stockbridge Registration District. 1

The known children of Henry REEVES and Sarah (nee mnu) are
  1. Elizabeth REEVES, b c1843, m James B NEWSHAM
  2. Sarah REEVES, b c1845, m George KNIGHT
  3. Henry REEVES, b c1854
  4. Charles REEVES, b c1860
The birth of all four children was recorded in the Stockbridge Registration District and successive census returns identify Kings Somborne, Hampshire as their place of birth.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Henry (aged 33) along with wife Sarah (28) and their two eldest children Elizabeth (8) and Sarah (6) are living in Kings Somborne, Hampshire. Henry claims birth in Kings Somborne and was working as an Agricultural Labourer. Two lodgers complete the household.

A decade later and the 1861 census shows Henry (age 43), wife Sarah (38) and their two younger children, Henry (7) & Charles (1) living in Kings Somborne. The two elder daughters are found elsewhere on the 1861 census. Henry again claims birth in Kings Somborne and is working as a Coal Dealer.

On the 1871 census, Henry, who is recorded under the name Harry, (age 52) plus wife Sarah (48) and younger son Charles (11) are again to be found in Kings Somborne. Henry is now working as a Wood Dealer.

At the time of the 1881 census, Henry is working as a Baker & Grocer. He and Sarah are living on the Stockbridge Road within the village of Kings Somborne, his claimed place of birth and he is now recorded as 63 years old. A servant, Hope SMITH, completes the household.

On the 1891 census, wife Sarah is described as a widow. FreeBMD has a strongly matching death registration during 1q1882 in the Stockbridge Reg. Dist. for a Henry Reeves, age 64. Do you have a certified copy of this entry?

On 3 April 1882, the will of Henry Reeves late of King's Somborne in the County of Southampton, General Dealer, who died 17 March 1882 at King's Somborne was proved at Winchester by James Bilsborough Newsham of Church Town Garstang in the County of Lancaster, School Teacher and George Knight of Croydon in the County of Surrey, Builder, the Executors.

Research Notes

1 In addition to Henry REEVES, the 1q1842 marriage entry on FreeBMD lists seven other individuals, including two Sarah's - Sarah MANSBRIDGE and Sarah DAZELEY. From the five census returns 1851-1891, we know Sarah claims birth in Kings Somborne, Hampshire. The Hampshire Genealogical Society's Baptism Index 1813-1841 has no entries for a Sarah DAZELEY (in fact, no DAZELEY entries or probable soundex variants) but does have a reasonable fit for Sarah MANSBRIDGE, baptised in April 1825 at St Peter & St Paul, Kings Somborne.
