Narrative

Charles was the second known child of Joseph REEVES and Hannah (mnu). The baptism of Charles on 11 January 1784 from the registers of the Parish Church of St Peter, East Tytherley is recorded by both FamilySearch and the Hampshire Genealogical Society's Index of Baptisms. The HGS additionally notes it was a private baptism, so may have been conducted in his parent's home or elsewhere. Charles was not received in church until May 1786, on the day when his younger sister Sophia was also baptised at the same church.

Nothing further is currently known of his early life.

Charles Reeves married Ann RUSSELL at the parish church of St Peter & St Paul, Kings Somborne in January 1806.

Known children of Charles Reeves and Ann (nee RUSSELL) are ...
  1. Ann Reeves, bapt February 1807
  2. Charles Reeves, bapt May 1808
  3. Sarah Reeves, bapt September 1810
  4. Elizabeth Reeves, bapt May 1812
  5. William Reeves, bapt May 1816
  6. Henry Reeves, bapt June 1818
All the above baptisms are noted in the Parish Registers of St Peter & St Paul, Kings Somborne, Hampshire

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Charles is enumerated as part of the household headed by William Harding (age 30) living in Kings Somborne. In addition to William Harding, the household comprises Ann Harding (also aged 30), William (12), Jane (10), Henry (8), Charles (6), Sarah (4), Elizabeth (2) and our subject Charles Reeves (50). All were born within the county (Hampshire) and Charles occupation is given as Agricultural Labourer.

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Charles is again found in the household of William Harding (age 42), his wife Ann (42) and their children Henry (17), Charles (16), Sarah (12), Elizabeth (10), John (8), Benjamin (6) and Charles Reeves (66). Charles is described as being Father-in-Law and a widower, who was claims birth in East Tytherley. Charles' occupation is noted as Carrier.

Charles has not been identified on the 1861 census return. He is not in the Harding household. FreeBMD has two possible death registrations in the preceding decade of a Charles Reeves in the Stockbridge Registration District either of which may be this individual.

Research Notes

The implication of Charles being father-in-law to William Harding is that William's wife Ann is Charles' daughter Ann Reeves. Ann Harding's age of 44 points to a birth around 1807 and her place of birth is noted as Kings Somborne, matching Ann Reeves.

Whilst it is probable Ann Reeves, daughter of Charles Reeves is indeed Ann Harding, to date, no marriage between William Harding and Ann Reeves has been found in the period 1820 to 1851 in HGS Marriage Index or FreeBMD Marriage Index. It is, of course, possible that they married elsewhere or Ann had previously wed and married for a second time as a widow, under her first husband's surname.

The HGS Baptism index records five baptisms with William & Ann(e) Harding as parents, the earliest being of George William in May 1828 (shown as simply William on the 1841 census), then Jane in Feb 1830, Henry in Oct 1832, Charles in 1835 & Elizabeth in Sept 1839, all at Kings Somborne. This would point to marriage round 1827/28 when Ann would have been 21 years old.

William and Ann Harding's younger children were born in the era of civil registration (after 1 July 1837). Do you have a copy of Elizabeth Harding's birth certificate from 3q1839 showing her mother's maiden name as Reeves??
