Ira Rives is named in the 1827 will of his grandfather William Rives of Iredell County who left him a large portion of his estate. A note in the estate file of William Reeves (1829) dated 17 February 1836 states "Return to Court of Lebitious Gaithe Gaurdian for Ira Reeves, son of Hansel Reeves, It being a Legacy Willed to him by his Grandfather William Reeves."

There are no listings in the census records of Iredell County for Ira Rives or Reeves; however, the children and their mother are listed in the 1850 household of John Rinehart who their widowed mother married in 1849.
