Narrative

Little is known with certainty about James' early life. It is possible he is James, son of Joseph Reeves and Elizabeth, who was baptised at Sherfield English on 25 December 1796.

From the 1841 & 1851 census returns we know James' wife was Sarah. It is possible  This is the James Reeves who married Sarah FRIEND on 03 Oct 1822 in East Wellow, Hampshire. See Research Note 1 below

The baptism of all their children occurred at the Parish Church of St Leonard in Sherfield English, Hampshire.

James, Sarah and their first six children appear on the June 1841 census in the West Wellow parish area of Wiltshire. James is shown as 45 years old and a Farmer. He was not born in county (Wiltshire). The place name is very indistinctly written but could be read as Pilgrumes (sic).

On the March 1851 census, James plus wife Sarah and their four younger children are living on Wellow Wood Road, in the parish of West Wellow. James is 52 years old and born in Sherfield English, Hampshire. He is described as a Higgler and Farmer of 12 Acres.

By the 1861 census wife Sarah is the head of household and a widow, living at Pilgrims Farm on Wellow Wood Road. FreeBMD has a possible death registration for this James Reeves in 1858 in the Romsey Registration District. See Research Note 2 below.

Research Notes

(1) Daughter Hester and son William were both born after the start of the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths. A birth registration for Hester has yet to be identified. William's birth was registered during the second quarter of 1843 in Romsey and Mitchelmersh Registration District and his mother's maiden name was recorded as FRIEND.

(2) It was previously suggested that the death of James REEVES shown in FreeBMD in Romsey Registration District during 1858 might be for this individual. The more recent GRO Index to Deaths indicates this James was age 0, so not our subject who would have been around 59 at this time.
